I always enjoy your analyses-this one especially. Here in the U.S. we are having some extreme difficulties sustaining our current and future retirees. While I agree immigration is a tool that can help, to sustain our taxation needs it would need to be permanent, fully tax paying immigrants. Students on F-1s that qualify for OPT and CPT visas pay neither FICA nor federal tax from most countries. H-1B visas pay taxes to their home country if we have tax treaties but do pay FICA and many migrants currently crossing our borders illegally pay no significant taxes to FICA or federal taxes. This will not serve to bolster our Social Security or Medicare system in a sustainable way. The math is always key but getting our hands on the right data is tricky.
